According to Mr. Kamel Rezig, implementing the directive of the Prime Minister and after considering the proposals to protect local products received by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Agriculture, the list of imported goods is subject to DAPS has been revised upward.
Specifically, from now on, the list will include 2,608 products instead of 992 (increasing 1,616 new items) and will be published in the Official Gazette by the Government in the next few days. The applicable tax rate of DAPS is from 30% to 200% depending on the imported item (not including the average import tax of 30% and VAT of 19%). For example, imported fresh pineapple, mango, mangosteen, defense tax up to 120% (in addition to 30% import tax, 19% VAT, 2% solidarity tax), mushrooms, instant noodles are subject to temporary additional defense tax of 70%, mobile phones at 60%, etc.
The Algerian Minister of Trade and Export Promotion also confirmed that this list of 2,608 products relates to goods imported from countries that do not have preferential trade agreements with Algeria. As for the countries with which Algeria has free trade agreements (FTAs) such as the European Union, the Greater Arab Area and the African Union, the list includes only 141 items.
DAPS is a temporary additional defense tax established in September 2018 within the framework of the 2018 Additional Finance Law to protect domestic production and replace the import ban on nearly 1,000 items applied before. That's from January 1, 2018. The DAPS tax rate ranges from 30 to 200% depending on the type of item.
