In the printing sector, there are 145 enterprises, of which 26 are in the field of production of school books and 8 newspapers. The sector employs about 25,000 people, contributing 4% to the GDP of the industry as a whole.
Previously, the packaging and printing industry of Tunisia had strong growth, averaging about 10% per year. Due to the economic crisis, this industry has been facing many difficulties. In 2019, Tunisia imported about 277 million euros of paper and paperboard products while export revenue was only about 106 million euros. Add to that the negative impact caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2020, Tunisia imports about 300,000 tons of paper and paperboard with a turnover of 300 million euros.
The packaging industry sector mainly serves the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, playing a key role in the production chain from the raw product to the final consumer. As a result, issues of food safety and hygiene, consumer information, design and respect for the environment play an important role in this dynamic and innovative industry.
