According to the Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association, the United States is currently the No. 1 import market for Vietnam's wood and wood products, accounting for 45% of the industry's total export value with an average growth rate of 15- 17% / year. Particularly in the first 5 months of the year, wood furniture export turnover to the US reached 1.839 billion USD, up 34.98% over the same period in 2018 and accounted for 46% of the total export value of the whole industry.
Not only is the main import market, in the opposite direction, the United States is also the number one supplier of wood materials to Vietnam. In the first 5 months of the year, wood imports reached 138.490 million USD, corresponding to the supply of over 420.62 thousand m3 of round timber, up 24.9% in value and 19% in volume over the same period in 2018.
Share at the recent conference on wood export, Mr. Nguyen Ton Quyen - Vice Chairman of Vietnam Timber and Forest Products Association - said that the United States is the country with the largest forest area in the world and has a production the exploitation volume is not less than 300 million m3 of timber / year. US material wood always ensures clear, legal, good quality and competitive prices. American wood is always the first choice for Vietnamese importers, especially in the context of increasingly strict import markets for wood products with the origin of wood materials.
Standing Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ha Cong Tuan said that the government's target for timber and forest products is to export 11 billion USD in 2019. Vietnam's Forest Law and the Voluntary Partnership Agreement on Forestry Enforcement, Forest Governance and Trade between Vietnam and Europe took effect in 2019 to ensure the legality and sustainability of wood products. Mr. Robert Hanson - Agricultural Counselor, US Embassy in Hanoi - said Vietnam is the number one destination for US hardwood exports in Southeast Asia. US hardwood exports to Vietnam in 2018 increased by 17.5% compared to 2017.
